Spotlight On… Brighton Holistics

In our ‘Spotlight On’ series, we’re showcasing the many things Woodingdean has to offer, through profiles of local business owners.

This week, Woodingdean in Business features Jon, the founder of Brighton Holistics, a training centre for a range of complementary therapies.

If it weren’t for my dyslexia, Brighton Holistics might not exist. I didn’t like school and I found it difficult to learn in the traditional system. I first trained as a massage therapist  over 20 years ago, and when I re-qualified in 2006 I was horrified to find out that industry had become a lot like the school I used to hate – huge groups and a ‘one size fits all’ approach, with no consideration for individual needs. I looked at this conveyor-belt learning and thought to myself that there had to be a better way, so I set up Brighton Holistics.
Our courses attract everybody and anybody. We’ve taught all sorts of people, from solicitors and teachers to healthcare professionals interested in complementary therapies. We run our courses in the way that we ourselves would like to be taught, creating a friendly, relaxed environment that’s nothing like school. That means comfy sofas, no desks and keeping the kettle on at all times!

You wouldn’t expect your doctor to be unqualified, so why your therapist? A lot of people don’t think of massage or waxing as a procedure, but if it’s not done properly the consequences can be disastrous, involving serious injuries. That’s why it’s essential that therapists are fully qualified from an accredited and reputable course, like the ones we run at Brighton Holistics. There’s a difference between just being ‘certificated’ and actually qualified, and many of our clients come to us after finding that they’ve spent £800+ on a course which doesn’t allow them to work professionally within the industry. It takes at least four days to become a qualified manicurist, but there are courses out there that just last one day. That’s a sure sign that they’re not industry accredited and they should be avoided.
Our students have gone on to work all over the place, including the Olympics! As well as many who stay in the local area, we’ve had people go as far afield as Australia, and one graduate is currently following the baton relay for the Commonwealth Games. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last eight years and we’d like to keep on as we are, delivering the best quality training and helping people to become qualified and achieve what they’ve always wanted to do.
Woodingdean is a great place to live and work. We have a friendly community and the perfect location on the edge of the city. I hope that as business owners we’ll carry on building up on what we already have and working together to make the town even better.
