Brighton and Hoves Artists Open Houses Christmas Festival 2012
Twice a year, artists across Brighton and Hove open their houses to the public in the Artists Open Houses Festival. This Christmas the festival is spread over three weekends, the weekend of December 1 and 2, the weekend of December 8 and 9, and the weekend of December 15 and 16. The houses are open between 11am and 6pm.
The **Brighton and Hove Artists Open House Festival ** is an opportunity for people local to Brighton, Hove, Woodingdean and the local areas to buy original pieces of art directly from the makers.
The artists who open their houses may not always be professional artists, some may be just beginning their career in art, others may be school or college students.
There are may different varieties of art work exhibited and sold at the Artists Open Houses, including painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics and textiles, printing, photography and much more.
It is ** FREE** to go into any Open House and many of the houses will offer you a cup of tea and maybe even homemade cakes and mince pies!
The Brighton and Hove Artists Open House s Festival takes place twice a year, once at Christmas and once in May. The idea of Open Houses first began in 1982 when Ned Hoskins, a Fiveways artist, invited the people of Brighton into his home to view his work. The idea became more and more popular and in 2004 a group of Open House artists developed the idea into a festival. The festival has inspired loads of local artists, and now artists in the surrounding towns, to open their front door to the public. Last May, Woodingdean’s Eve Shepherd invited people into her home to view her sculpture.
There are regular buses on both Saturday and Sunday from Woodingdean into Brighton and Hove. Most houses are unable to accept credit card to remember to take your cheque book or take some cash with you.
